Peninsula Fly Fishers

Lake Nacimiento
Bass Fishout

by Bob Schwehr

April 21-23 2006

A trusty group of fishers from PFF converged on Lake Nacimientoto stalk the spotted bass and white bass after a long winter’s rain. The timing is way off this year. It is still not clear if the white bass and spotted bass have spawned.  The  group: Bob Schwehr – Organizer,  John Files, Tony Plutinsky, Mike McGuire, Rich Catanzaro – Came Saturday (to hold casting practice ?#$?) and  Dave Turner.

We were fortunate to get two campsites right by the lake,  however were serenaded with Johny Cash music by a bunch of twenty-something water skiers until the appointed quiet hour of 10pm.

We had a good time. The weather was partly cloudy, and in the60’s most of the time. There was no rain, which must be a record this year. The winds were light, and the water temperature ranged from 62-77 degrees on the surface. The water was very clear. We saw several of the fish take the lures, and Mike got splashed by one taking a popper by the boat.
By my count there were 77 fish caught and released (very approximate), 3 others caught trolling and kept, and plus Rich and friend… caught several others, but no count was mentioned. Everyone caught fish… some on fly rods, many on other gear. The fish were off the shore maybe 20 feet, and down 5-15 feet, and only on the rocks. The best fishing was up toward the inlet narrows. We also caught fish in the Dip Creek arm and along the shore rocks in two places. Tony trolled by the dam. As predicted, we had to get boat-mobile to find the fish.
